Rincon, PR. has the only water nature reserve on the island besides Desecheo, the island off the western coast which no one is allowed on. The marine reserve is a special area located off Steps Beach and encompasses the famous wave breaking area known as Tres Palmas.
This pristine habitat is home to many tropical fish and species of endangered elk horn coral. A lot of work has been done by the Surfrider Foundation to keep this beautiful and rich area safe for future generations. You can visit their new office to speak to chapter members, join in on events, and gather some reading material to help spread the good word. They're located in the Black Eagle Marina right off 413 in town. The office is directly above Club Nautico bar, you'll see the painting of the Tres Palmas landscape up above the door.
What better way to experience this protected area than by sailboat? The "Katarina" sails the coast of Rincon and will take a group of up to 18 passengers out to sea. The day sail lets you experience snorkeling the caribbean reef, just jump right off the side of the boat! They also do a sunset "cocktail cruise" where you can enjoy all you can drink pina coladas, rum punches, and Medalla beers while watching the glowing sun set in the western sky.
